How the Policy Works

Adult clay is purchased separately. Standard-format adult courses include a defined firing allowance across skill levels. Youth and family programs use communal materials, while large-scale and specialist formats state their own terms.

Adult Clay

$25 per sealed 25-pound bag, plus applicable sales tax. No half bags.

Standard Adult Courses

Standard bisque and glaze firing included for up to 20 pounds of bisqueware per enrolled student.

Youth & Family

Instructor-managed communal clay, standard glazes, and firing for assigned projects included.

Large & Specialist Work

Course-specific material and firing terms apply based on scale, kiln volume, process, handling, and risk.

Membership

Clay and firing are purchased separately. Approved outside clay may be used after review and testing.

Tools & Supplies

Basic class tools, pails, sponges, shared equipment, standard glazes, and routine cleaning supplies are provided.

Adult Students

Clay Purchases

Price and Bag Size

Firebox sells approved studio clay for $25 per sealed 25-pound bag, plus any sales tax required by Massachusetts law. Firebox does not divide or repackage clay and does not sell half bags.

Approved Clay Bodies

Adult students must use the approved Firebox clay body specified or recommended for their course. Outside clay bodies are not permitted in student work unless Firebox expressly approves a course-specific exception.

Returning Students

Returning students may use compatible approved Firebox clay remaining from a previous course. They are not required to purchase another bag solely because they enroll again.

Unused student-purchased clay remains the student’s property, subject to Firebox storage and removal rules.

Adult Courses

Standard Firing Allowance

The firing allowance is based on course format and expected scale—not on whether a course is beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

What Is Included

Standard-format adult wheel, handbuilding, and mixed-methods courses include one standard bisque firing and one standard glaze firing for up to 20 pounds of bisqueware per enrolled student, unless the course listing states otherwise.

Terms of the Allowance

The allowance has no cash value, is not transferable, and expires at the end of the course. Work beyond the allowance is charged at the current standard studio firing rate.

Skill Level

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced standard-format courses receive the same allowance. Skill level alone does not determine whether firing is included.

Different Formats

Youth, Family & Specialist Courses

Youth and Parent + Child

Youth and Parent + Child courses use instructor-managed communal clay. Clay is portioned according to the curriculum and is not issued as a personal bag.

Communal clay, standard studio glazes, and standard firing for assigned class projects are included in tuition. Unusually large, additional, or independently initiated work requires instructor approval and may carry an additional charge disclosed in advance.

Large Vessels and Substantial Sculpture

Courses centered on large vessels or substantial sculpture may exclude firing or use a separate pricing method because kiln volume, drying, handling, construction, and risk differ materially from standard course work.

Specialist Processes

Raku and other specialist processes follow the clay, glaze, material, safety, and firing terms stated in the individual registration listing. Gabrielle LoTurco’s figure-sculpture courses do not include firing.

Tools, Glazes & Cleaning Supplies

What Firebox Provides

Firebox provides basic class tools, pails, sponges, shared studio equipment, standard studio glazes approved for the course, appropriate work-in-progress storage, and routine cleaning supplies.

Specialized Requirements

Instructors identify any prerequisite, specialized tool, protective equipment, or project-specific component before registration. These items are not included unless the course listing expressly says they are.

Glaze Use

Students use only the studio glazes supplied or approved for their course and must follow Firebox application and use guidance. A glaze should not be assumed suitable for a food-contact surface merely because it is available in the studio.

Members

Clay, Firing & Large Work

Member Clay

Members may purchase Firebox clay for $25 per sealed 25-pound bag or introduce an outside clay body after identification, review, documented testing, and studio approval. Firebox does not sell half bags.

Member Firing

Member firing is purchased separately. Standard firing is charged at $3 per pound of bisqueware and includes one bisque firing and one standard glaze firing. Refiring is $5 per piece and requires studio approval.

Large or Oversized Work

Before beginning large or oversized work, members must discuss the proposed dimensions, construction, drying, handling, and firing plan with the studio manager or operations lead. Accommodation depends on available workspace, usable kiln dimensions, kiln capacity, handling risk, and scheduling.

Firebox is not responsible for work that cannot be fired because it exceeds the usable dimensions or capacity of the available kilns. Consultation does not guarantee accommodation or firing. Large work may be priced according to kiln volume rather than weight.

Firing Standards

Acceptance, Risk & Results

Work Submitted for Firing

Firebox may refuse work that is wet, excessively thick, structurally unstable, unidentified, made from unapproved materials, too large to handle or fire safely, or likely to damage kiln shelves, equipment, other work, or the kiln itself.

No Guarantee of Outcome

Ceramics is inherently unpredictable. Firebox will use reasonable care in handling and firing work but cannot guarantee that a piece will survive production or achieve a particular color, surface, form, fit, finish, or other result.

Equipment Failure

If Firebox determines that a firing was unsuccessful because of kiln or studio-equipment failure, Firebox may waive or credit the affected firing fee. This does not apply to losses caused by clay, glaze, construction, drying, application, handling before submission, or another maker-controlled factor.

Course-specific terms control. If an individual course listing states terms that differ from this general policy, the clearly published course-specific terms govern that course. Complete studio-use, safety, cancellation, and liability provisions remain available in the Studio Policies.
