Studio Standards

Studio Policies

These policies govern classes, memberships, materials, firing, studio access, safety, conduct, cancellations, and refunds at Firebox Pottery Studio.

Classes and Attendance

Enrollment Means Reserving a Place

Class seats are limited. Registration reserves instructor time, workspace, and studio capacity for the full course.

Age Requirement

Classes and memberships are for adults. Firebox does not admit unaccompanied minors to general classes or membership programming.

Dedicated children's programming may be offered separately and will be announced with its own enrollment terms and age requirements.

Missed Classes

Missed classes are the student's responsibility. Firebox does not offer make-up classes, substitute sessions, prorated refunds, or credits for missed attendance.

Student Practice Access

Classes are scheduled in Studio A. When no class is scheduled, enrolled students may use Studio A for independent practice, subject to availability of equipment and workspace.

Student practice access is limited to Studio A and does not include membership resources in Studio D. Students must finish, clean, and clear the space before the next scheduled class. Under no circumstances may student practice delay the start of a class.

Studio-Canceled Sessions

If Firebox cancels an individual class session, the studio will schedule a replacement session or provide another appropriate remedy.

Cancellations and Refunds

Published Deadlines Apply

Multi-Week Classes

14 or more days before the first class: full refund.

7–13 days before the first class: 50% refund or full studio credit.

Fewer than 7 days before the first class: no refund or credit.

Once a course begins, missed sessions are not refundable and cannot be made up.

Workshops and Public Events

7 or more days before the event: full refund.

3–6 days before the event: full studio credit.

Fewer than 72 hours before the event: no refund or credit.

Private and Corporate Events

Private and corporate events are governed by a separate event agreement. Cancellation terms, deposits, and scheduling are specified in that agreement.

Membership Billing, Renewal, and Cancellation

Membership begins on the approved start date. If a member begins after the first day of the month, the initial membership charge may be prorated through the final day of that calendar month.

Beginning with the next calendar month, month-to-month membership renews automatically on the first day of each month and provides access through the final day of that month.

Members must cancel before the next renewal date to prevent the following month's charge. Ongoing monthly membership fees are billed in full and are not prorated. Firebox does not provide partial-month refunds, credits, extensions, or voluntary pauses once a calendar month begins.

A member who cancels retains access through the final day of the last paid calendar month.

Prepaid membership terms are nonrefundable except where Firebox cannot provide access for an extended period.

Member Exit and Storage Clearance

Members whose membership ends — whether by cancellation, non-renewal, or termination — must complete and sign a member exit form before their final day of access. The exit form confirms that all finished and in-progress work has been collected, all personal tools and materials have been removed, and the assigned storage shelf has been cleaned.

Items remaining after the final day of access are subject to a late removal fee that accrues daily. Items not claimed within the posted holding period will be discarded. Firebox is not responsible for storing, protecting, or returning items left after the membership ends.

Former Member Access

Former members who need limited studio access after membership ends may arrange to purchase day passes, subject to availability, eligibility, and the access permitted under the day-pass program.

If Firebox Cancels

If Firebox cancels an entire class, workshop, or event, affected participants will receive a full refund.

Clay, Glazes, and Firing

Materials and Firing Charges

Clay Sales

Firebox sells approved studio clay to students and members at cost, plus any sales tax required by Massachusetts law. Clay is purchased separately by the bag and is not included in class tuition or membership fees.

Students must use clay purchased through Firebox. Members may purchase studio clay or bring an outside clay body after review and approval.

Glaze Access

Students may use only the glazes supplied for their class.

Members may use the Firebox house glaze library and may introduce additional glazes after documented testing and studio approval.

Standard Firing

Standard firing is charged at $3 per pound of bisque ware. This fee includes one bisque firing and one standard glaze firing.

Refiring

Refiring is charged at a flat rate of $5 per piece and requires studio approval. Refiring does not guarantee correction of glaze or surface defects.

Large Work

Large or oversized work requires prior approval. Approval depends on drying requirements, structural stability, handling risk, kiln capacity, and scheduling.

Because oversized pieces may occupy kiln volume out of proportion to their weight, large-work firing may be priced according to kiln volume occupied rather than at the standard per-pound rate.

Dedicated Loads and Custom Schedules

Dedicated kiln loads and custom firing schedules may be available to members after technical review. They are subject to kiln availability, compatibility, scheduling, and additional charges.

Risk and Results

No Guarantee of Ceramic Outcomes

Ceramics is inherently unpredictable. Drying, handling, glazing, firing, clay and glaze chemistry, kiln conditions, and interactions within a shared kiln may all affect the final result.

No Guarantee

Firebox will use reasonable care in handling and firing work, but cannot guarantee that any piece will survive production or achieve a particular color, surface, form, fit, finish, or other outcome.

Work may crack, warp, break, blister, crawl, run, discolor, fuse to kiln furniture, or otherwise differ from expectations.

Equipment Failure

If Firebox determines that a firing was unsuccessful because of kiln or studio-equipment failure, Firebox may waive or credit the affected firing fee.

This does not apply to losses caused by clay, glaze, construction, drying, application, handling before submission, or other maker-controlled factors.

Unsafe or Unidentified Work

Firebox may refuse to fire work that is wet, excessively thick, structurally unstable, made from unidentified or unapproved materials, or likely to damage kiln shelves, equipment, other work, or the kiln itself.

Work Ownership

Work produced at Firebox belongs to the maker. Firebox claims no ownership interest in work created by students or members.

This does not apply to work that has been abandoned or left unclaimed beyond the applicable holding period, which Firebox may discard, donate, or sell as provided under the unclaimed-work policy.

Studio Conduct

Shared Space Requires Shared Standards

Studio Access

Firebox is a private working studio. Access is limited to current members and enrolled students during published hours. Guests, children, and pets are not permitted in the studio.

Attire and Safety

Closed-toe shoes are required at all times in the studio. Wear clothing you are comfortable getting dirty. Clay stains and glaze splashes are part of the process.

Cleanup and Safe Working Conditions

Firebox is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful working environment. Every student, member, instructor, and visitor is responsible for cleaning the workspace, tools, and equipment they use. Cleanup must be completed promptly and within the time available for the session.

Repeated failure to clean, unsafe handling of materials or equipment, obstruction of shared work areas, or conduct that creates an unsafe or disrespectful working environment may result in suspension or termination of class enrollment, membership, or studio access.

Dust Control

Dry sweeping, dry scraping, and dry sanding are not permitted on site or in the immediate vicinity of Firebox. Wet-cleaning and approved silica-safe methods must be used.

Equipment and Training

Some equipment and processes require orientation, training, testing, or prior approval. Access may be withheld until those requirements are met.

Photography and Recording

Firebox may photograph the studio and work in progress for use in marketing, social media, and promotional materials. Members and students have a reasonable right to decline being photographed or having their work photographed for studio use.

Members and students may photograph their own work. A dedicated photo area for documenting individual pieces is planned.

Work Identification and Unclaimed Pieces

Studio users are expected to place a clear, recognizable chop mark or other approved identifying mark on each piece submitted for firing. Identification should remain legible through both bisque and glaze firing.

Pieces that cannot be identified will be placed on an appropriately labeled unidentified-work shelf. Users are responsible for checking this shelf and claiming their work within the published holding period.

If work remains unidentified or unclaimed after the applicable holding period, Firebox may discard, donate, or sell the work as appropriate. Firebox is not responsible for compensating the maker for work disposed of under this policy.

Damage and Misuse

Users may be responsible for the reasonable cost of repair or replacement where damage results from negligent, unauthorized, or prohibited use.

Community Conduct

Firebox is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment. Students, members, instructors, staff, visitors, and event participants are expected to treat others with dignity and respect.

Harassment, discrimination, bullying, threats, intimidation, unwanted physical contact, abusive language, deliberate disruption, intoxication that affects safe participation, and conduct that interferes with another person's ability to use the studio are not permitted.

Do not touch, move, use, alter, photograph, or handle another person's work, tools, materials, or belongings without permission.

Reporting Concerns

Concerns about safety, conduct, harassment, discrimination, or studio operations may be reported privately to Firebox by email, phone, or directly to the studio manager.

Reports will be reviewed as promptly and fairly as reasonably possible. Firebox may speak with the people involved, review available information, and take action it considers appropriate. Reports will be handled as privately as reasonably possible, but confidentiality cannot be guaranteed where disclosure is necessary to investigate or respond.

Retaliation against a person who raises a concern in good faith or participates in a review is prohibited.

Emergency Response and Law Enforcement

Firebox may contact emergency services or law enforcement when it reasonably believes that conduct presents an immediate or serious threat to a person, property, equipment, or studio operations.

This may include physical violence, credible threats of violence, assault, stalking, suspected criminal conduct, serious property damage, possession of a weapon, refusal to leave after access has been revoked, or other conduct requiring urgent intervention.

Anyone in immediate danger should call 911. Firebox may request police assistance, issue a no-trespass notice, or take other lawful steps when an individual refuses to leave or returns after being told that they are no longer permitted on the property.

Firebox may preserve and provide relevant information to emergency services or law enforcement, including incident records, witness accounts, communications, photographs, access records, or security footage, when legally required or reasonably necessary to address a safety or criminal matter.

Studio Feedback

Firebox welcomes constructive feedback about classes, membership, accessibility, safety, equipment, policies, and studio operations. Feedback may be submitted by email, phone, directly to the studio manager, or through periodic surveys.

Feedback is not a substitute for promptly reporting an immediate safety concern or serious conduct issue. Those matters should be raised directly with the studio manager or emergency services as appropriate.

Suspension or Termination

Firebox may suspend or terminate class enrollment, membership, or studio access when an individual creates an unsafe or disrespectful working environment, repeatedly fails to clean, misuses equipment, harasses others, damages property, uses unauthorized materials, or otherwise commits a serious or repeated violation of studio policy.

Where appropriate, Firebox may issue a warning or require corrective action before termination. Immediate suspension or termination may be imposed when conduct presents a material safety risk or serious threat to people, equipment, work, or studio operations.

Liability

Assumption of Risk and Waiver

Working in a ceramics studio involves inherent risks. Participation in classes, membership, events, and any other studio activities requires acknowledgment of those risks.

Inherent Risks

Ceramics involves exposure to high-temperature kilns, sharp tools, heavy equipment, wet surfaces, airborne silica dust, chemical glazes, and other materials and conditions that carry a risk of personal injury, property damage, or allergic reaction.

By participating in any Firebox class, membership, event, or studio activity, participants acknowledge and accept these inherent risks.

Waiver Requirement

All students, members, and event participants must sign a liability waiver and release before accessing the studio. The waiver is provided at the time of enrollment or membership signup.

Enrollment or membership is considered null and void if the waiver is not signed. No studio access will be granted until a signed waiver is on file.

Policies may be updated as studio operations develop. The version published on this page at the time of enrollment, booking, or membership use will govern unless Firebox provides notice of a later change.
