Shan Ross

they/them

Shan is a ceramic artist whose functional pottery explores connection, nature, identity, and community. Through their practice, Lost Cairn Arts, they balance tradition with experimentation and consider how the objects in our lives can foster meaningful relationships.

About The Artist

Connection, Nature & Repair

Shan holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where their work explored themes of disability, identity, and community. Through Lost Cairn Arts, they create functional pottery that emphasizes connection and nature.

Their artistic practice considers the ways we connect with one another, our environments, and the objects that shape our lives. Working primarily in ceramics, Shan is interested in the balance between functionality and expression, tradition and experimentation.

Influenced by the natural world and ideas of identity, belonging, and repair, their work examines how small interactions can create meaningful connections. Shan sees ceramics as both a personal practice and a shared experience—one shaped by the people and communities around us.

Teaching Approach

My approach to teaching ceramics is rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and the joys of imperfection. I strive to create an inclusive, supportive environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, exploring materials, and developing their own creative voices.
